Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Causes, Symptoms, Risks, and Prevention
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is one of the most widespread chronic health conditions worldwide. It occurs when the force of blood against the walls of the arteries remains consistently too high, putting extra strain on the heart and blood vessels. Often referred to as the “silent killer,” hypertension may not show noticeable symptoms for years, yet it can cause severe damage to vital organs if left untreated.

What is Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure is measured using two values: Systolic Pressure: Pressure when the heart beats Diastolic Pressure: Pressure when the heart rests between beats A normal blood pressure reading is typically around 120/80 mmHg.

Causes of Hypertension

Hypertension can develop due to various factors, including: Unhealthy diet (high salt, low potassium) Lack of physical activity Obesity Smoking and alcohol consumption Chronic stress Genetic factors (family history) Underlying medical conditions (kidney disease, hormonal disorders)

Symptoms

In many cases, hypertension has no obvious symptoms. However, in severe cases, individuals may experience:

Headaches Shortness of breath Nosebleeds Dizziness Chest pain

These symptoms usually appear only when blood pressure reaches dangerously high levels.
